EDMONTON REGIONAL SAFETY COMMITTEE

AND

MEDICINE HAT REGIONAL SAFETY COMMITTEE

Edmonton Regional Safety Committee

The Edmonton Regional Safety Committee held five scheduled committee meetings with an average of 30 members in attendance at each meeting during the 2009 year. New members continue to join each year strongly due to their solid reputation as leaders in the safety community in and around Edmonton.

The committee brought in a guest speaker to their meetings during 2009 to enhance the knowledge of its members. ERSC members also participated in many ad-hoc meetings, including COAA, NAOSH, and the Day of Mourning.

The ERSC has been involved with the Skills Canada Competition since 2004 promoting safety and the ACSA to secondary students involved in the competition. Last fall a number of members made their way to Calgary to assist with the World Skills Competition.

Each year the ERSC produces a poster campaign using an Excuses theme. In 2009 the focus was on Housekeeping. The ERSC is currently finishing their third generic Safe Work Practice DVD.  This one covers Personal Protective Equipment and should be ready soon. The ERSC also produced the ICE card which is available through our materials department.

Medicine Hat Regional Safety Committee

The Medicine Hat Regional Safety Committee held 5 luncheon meetings in 2009 with an average attendance of 19 people.  They also held 10 ad hoc meetings for the Monument repair, Safety City ground repair and Day of Mourning subcommittees.

The MHRSC sponsored an appreciation day for members of the school patrol, which consisted of a day at the movies at the Galaxy Theatre.  Each attendee was provided with a ticket and a goody box containing popcorn, a drink and a Kinder egg.

The MHRSC posted 30-second commercials on two of the FM radio stations – Rock 105.3, for the younger crowd (18-30) and The Lounge 101.2 for the older set.  Very positive feedback came back from both the community and other regional committee members.

The MHRSC is actively working on the Day Mourning Monument with needed repairs and are busy planning a special National Day of Mourning Ceremony as it is the monument's 10-year Anniversary.

The Partners Award

Over the years we have worked with a number of organizations who have not been directly involved in construction health and safety but have had an impact on our industry either working directly with our members or working with organizations such as the Workers’ Compensation Board and Alberta Employment and Immigration.

ICOM Productions Incorporated is a media development company located in Calgary, Alberta. ICOM has developed a unique perspective for the development of online learning.  ICOM defines itself as a learning company first and a technology company second. This is probably why the ACSA has been working with ICOM for over 6 years.

ICOM’s first project with the ACSA came through the Alberta Roadbuilders' and Heavy Construction Association with the redevelopment of the RSTS program in 2004.

ICOM was a natural fit when the ACSA decided to create our Loss Prevention and Control for Executives program. The ACSA was looking for a new high impact delivery method for a classroom style training course which ICOM delivered using their education and technological expertise.

The new Construction Safety Training System, CSTS-09, was a massive task on which ICOM partnered with the ACSA.  Building on the experiences of developing the RSTS program ICOM worked with the eLearning department at the ACSA to design, develop and release a world-class online safety orientation product.

ICOM’s laid back but totally professional attitude is very easy to work. The ACSA has always prided itself on the partnerships we have and are happy to partner in ICOM in safety education development. Congratulations to our 2009 partners Award recipient .. ICOM Productions Incorporated.
