Friend of the ACSA Award

Over the years we have worked with a number of individuals who have not been directly involved in the construction health & safety but have had an impact on our industry either working directly with our members or working with organizations such as the Workers' Compensation Board and Alberta Employment and Immigration.

Michael Joyce:  (Click Name to view Picture)

Mike was the Executive Director for Manufacturers’ Health and Safety Association for many years until late last fall when he retired.  Mike was always willing to participant alongside the ASCA on committees struck to improve safety training and initiatives throughout his tenure at the Manufacturers' Health and Safety Association.  Over the past couple years he worked closely with the ACSA in building the new training facility in Balzac for both associations and was a key member with the Health and Safety Association Network committee.

Congratulations Mike you are a great friend of the ACSA.

Special Recognition Award

Each year the ACSA gives special recognition to individuals who have gone above and beyond the norm supporting construction health and safety in our province.  This award is presented for outstanding personal efforts given to the reduction of lost time claims in the construction industry, and for invaluable input applied to the successful development of health and safety programs for the ACSA.

Wayne King: (Click Name to view Picture)

Wayne is the owner and operator of Anchor “D” Safety, founded in 1996 and has been involved in the safety industry since 1984. Wayne has written numerous safety programs and safety training programs for a variety of different companies.  Through continuous training, Wayne has obtained the Occupational Health and Safety certificate from the U of A, and his CSO designation from the ACSA.  In Wayne’s words “safety begins at the top and that means the corporate entity, I continue to devote my life to offering training, information and investigations into what can go wrong, how it can happen and how to prevent it.  Only from history, knowledge and continued study can we keep people safe at work and at home.”

Bill Tremain: (Click Name to view Picture)

Bill worked for the Alberta Construction Safety Association for 10 years retiring in 2006 to work as an independent safety consultant.  Prior to working at the ACSA Bill spend 24 years with the Canadian Armed Forces and another 6 years with PCL Contractors Inc.  While at PCL Bill worked with the ACSA on training initiatives for First Nation’s people.  Bill still remains active with the ACSA as a contract trainer in the southern region and continues to help the ACSA with its goals and initiatives as a member of the Calgary Regional Safety Committee.

Co Vanderlaan: (Click Name to view Picture)

Co retired from the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) and the ACSA Board of Directors in September 2007.  Co worked for CLAC for 44 years retiring as the National Representative, he joined the ACSA Board of Directors in 1999 and was a strong and steady voice for safety concerns in the industry.  Co sat on a number of committees while on the Board and helped develop and deploy many ACSA programs and initiatives.  Last year we honored CLAC with a Partner award, this year we would like to honor Co Vanderlaan, the man behind CLAC for many years.

Hans Tiedemann: (Sorry no Picture Available)

Hans is the Executive Director for the Mechanical Contractors Association of Alberta and has been in that position since 1997.  The MCA Alberta Board appointed Hans as their Director Representative to the ACSA Board of Directors in 1998.  Prior to joining MCA Alberta, Hans worked for the Alberta Motor Association in a number of cities throughout the province and brings many years of administrative and safety experience and education.  Hans has always worked closely with the ACSA on its initiatives to bring quality education and advice to the industry.

Partners Award

With our Partners award we recognize an organization working with the ACSA towards the reduction of lost time claims in Alberta.

This year's award goes to:

The Manufacturers' Health & Safety Association

The Manufacturers' Health & Safety Association became a funded safety association in 1993 at the request of the metal fabricating industry in order to reduce injuries in the steel fabricating industry.

The mandate of the MHSA is to promote and present health and safety training programs for employers and employees in the manufacturing industry and provide assistance to employers and employees who have problems within the Workers' Compensation system.

MHSA has long worked with the ACSA in development and sharing of programs and resources.  MHSA and ACSA have had a reciprocal training agreement with our LSE program and their ECM for many years.

MHSA sits on many of the same committees as the ACSA and can always be counted on for reciprocal support.

Recently MHSA has partnered in building a new education facility in Balzac which will serve both our members training needs.

Congratulations to the 2007 ACSA Partner Award, the Manufacturers' Health & Safety Association.

The Committee of the Year Award
The Committee of the Year Award is presented annually to a regional safety committee for their outstanding progress and significant contribution to committee development during the year.

Determining a winner between the regions is always a very difficult task.

The following criteria is considered for this presentation of the Award of Excellence:

-          The number of regular, sub, ad hoc, and technical meetings held
-          Committee member attendance
-          Worker representation attendance
-          Projects completed
-          NAOSH week involvement
-          Contributions to the Advisor newsletter
-          Identifying and resolving health and safety needs and concerns for the region
-          Promoting ACSA courses, programs, and educational activities

The Edmonton Regional Safety Committee held five scheduled committee meetings with the average of 30 members in attendance. New members continue to join each year strongly due to their solid reputation as a leaders in the safety community in and around Edmonton. The committee brought in a guest speaker to each meeting during 2007 to enhance the knowledge of its members. ERSC members also participated in many sub and ad-hoc meetings, including COAA, NAOSH, and the Day of Mourning.

The ERSC Education committee created a Field Level Risk Assessment Poster depicting different hazards. They had 5 posters coloured by students and then laminated for facilitators to use while presenting in schools.

The ERSC has been involved with the Skills Canada Competition for the past 6 years promoting safety and the ACSA to secondary students involved in the competition. Members of the ERSC worked with the ACSA to expand their web pages to include information on their Speakers corner program and a page to order and download their colouring book and posters. Again last year the ERSC worked on their “Excuse” poster campaign focusing on respiratory issues.

During 2007 the ERSC developed and produced a second generic Safe Work Practice DVD. This one covers three of the most common Grinders used in the construction industry.

Congratulations Edmonton for being this year’s “Regional Safety Committee of the Year”.
