5001 Flagperson Train-the-Trainer (1 day)

Description: This one-day course is designed for those involved in the day-to-day operations where workers and the general public are exposed to hazards created by vehicles and/or equipment. Safety precautions must be in place for the protection of those who come into contact with the construction zone.

Course Objective:

The object of this Train-the-Trainer course is to standardize flagperson training for the construction industry in Alberta.

Course Content:

The course focuses on:

  • How to train workers who have no prior knowledge or experience in flagging
  • The flagpersons responsibilities for the protection of co-workers and the general public
  • Identifying the correct flagging practices and procedures, equipment and clothing
  • How to communicate with co-workers and the general public
  • The importance of the flag station and the flagperson's location
  • How to deal with emergency vehicles
  • Developing a training program using the "Tell, Show and Do" method
Participants who successfully meet the course requirements will be issued a Flagperson Train-the-Trainer certificate. Certification allows the trainer to conduct in-house training, using the self-study workbook and site-specific training methods. Re-certification is required every three years.

Note: Workers will receive wallet-sized cards from the ACSA proving Flagperson certification after successfully completing the in-house training.

This course is a pre-requisite for the Alberta Temporary Traffic Accommodation Course (ATTC).

This program can be one of the four core courses required for the Certificate of Recognition (COR) Program.

  • Prerequisites: None, field construction experience would be an asset.
